“This isn’t my last contract,” Kesler said. “I want another one after this. Right now, I’m sitting here saying I won’t be done. My family supports that, and they know.”

“I felt more comfortable with voicing my own opinion, and battling with the guys night in and night out,” Kesler said. “You become a family and I definitely feel a part of the core group now.”

Heading into the hearing, Smith asked for $4.75 million in arbitration while the Predators countered with a $3 million request. The agreed-upon deal falls somewhat in the middle of those numbers (averaging 4.25 million per season), so it has to be considered a win for both sides.

In a released statement, Predators GM David Poile stated that “Craig Smith is an integral part of our team’s young core and we are pleased to have agreed on a long-term contract that both parties are comfortable with. With Craig’s durability, work ethic and intensity, we see him continuing to build on his recent production and be a valuable contributor to our offensive attack for the next five seasons.”

As successful as 72-year-old Lamoriello has been through the duration of his NHL career, he decided to pursue an opportunity that presented a “different challenge.”

Lou Lamoriello has resigned as president of the New Jersey Devils to become the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, effectively ending a 28-year run with the organization. Lamoriello, who recently stepped aside as the Devils GM for his successor Ray Shero, leaves the club after three Stanley Cup championships and 21 playoff appearances.

“I can assure you it was not an easy decision for a lot of different reasons,” Lamoriello said at a news conference. “I’ve always said anything easy isn’t worth it; anybody can do it.”

Lamoriello took out a full page ad in the Bergen Record to thank the fans for their dedication to the organization.
